Asbestos removal
Our most common Southern Downs work, from vinyl floor tiles at Applethorpe to LDB ceilings at Allora and Killarney, all planned around council's booked disposal loads.
From our Harristown yard, Burke Industries crews reach Warwick in a little over an hour down the New England Highway. In the Southern Downs we've demolished and stripped asbestos from state school buildings in Warwick, Allora, Killarney and Stanthorpe. That work was done under WorkSafe Queensland Class A licence 2302383, by a family business going since 1987.

Warwick is one of Queensland's older inland towns. Canning Downs station was taken up in 1840, the town was gazetted in 1847, and the railway arrived from Toowoomba in the early 1870s. The centre still has its sandstone landmarks, including St Mark's (1868), the Masonic Hall (1886), the Town Hall (1888), and the post office and clock tower (1898). Around them sits a large post-war ring: the population grew by a quarter after the war and reached about 10,000 by the early 1960s, much of it housed in fibro-era homes.
In 2021 the town had 12,294 residents, a median age of 45, and a higher share of semi-detached dwellings (12.2%) than most Downs towns. Those older units and cottages are a frequent source of bonded asbestos.
The Condamine River at Warwick peaked at a record 9.10 m in February 1976, at 8.35 m in January 2011, and at 7.56 m in May 2022, when parts of town were inundated. Rebuilding after a flood often means stripping wet linings and ceilings. In older buildings those need testing for asbestos first.
Only two council sites accept asbestos: Warwick Central Waste Management Facility on Old Stanthorpe Road, and Stanthorpe on Rifle Range Road. Neither takes asbestos from outside the Southern Downs region. For commercial jobs:
The 1-tonne cap means a larger Warwick asbestos job needs a planned run of booked loads. Build that into the program from the start.

Removing obsolete school blocks, such as Z Block at Warwick State High School in 2023, plus post-war houses and units, with heritage checks first in the old town.
Make-good and site works after demolition, such as the site works we did at Warwick East State School in 2019, plus pads and access on Southern Downs blocks.
Excavation and removal to your consultant's plan. Southern Downs facilities need compliant test results and a week's notice before accepting contaminated soil.
Hydrant and hose reel installation and maintenance for commercial and industrial buildings in Warwick, under QBCC licence 48707.
Clean concrete costs $100 per tonne to stockpile at Warwick, against $280 per tonne for mixed waste. Crushing and reusing it on site, or bringing it back to our Toowoomba facility, usually costs less.

About 81 km, or a little over an hour, from Harristown via the New England Highway. That puts the whole Warwick district within a day's reach for site inspections, including Morgan Park, Rosenthal Heights, Freestone, Yangan, Hendon and Allora, and further out Killarney, Maryvale and Stanthorpe. Plant and crews travel from Toowoomba. Disposal is planned around Southern Downs' booking system, or the waste is brought back to Toowoomba where that's allowed.
Only with approval. Demolishing or removing a building on Southern Downs Regional Council's Local Heritage Register needs a preliminary approval, at $5,135 in 2026-27. Places on the Queensland Heritage Register need a development permit or exemption certificate. Check the heritage overlay maps first, as council's draft scheme would extend the overlay to adjoining land.
At Warwick Central Waste Management Facility on Old Stanthorpe Road, or the Stanthorpe facility. Asbestos from outside the Southern Downs isn't accepted. Commercial loads are capped at 1 tonne, must be booked a business day ahead, and need an Asbestos Disposal Form and a Waste Transport Certificate. The 2026-27 fee is $300 per tonne.
Southern Downs Regional Council's 2026-27 demolition permit fee is $389. Council certifies Class 1 and 10 buildings itself, and outsources Class 2–9 to an external certifier at cost plus an administration fee. Heritage-listed buildings need a separate preliminary approval, and relocating a house attracts a bond of $15,000 to $30,000.
