Licences, insurance and compliance

Government and commercial buyers need to check a contractor's licences before shortlisting. This page lists Burke Industries' current licences with their numbers and issuing bodies, shows how to verify each one on the public register, and sets out the safety, environmental and documentation systems we bring to every job.

Why we hold a Class A licence rather than Class A and B

In Queensland, a Class A licence covers everything a Class B licence does, plus friable asbestos such as pipe lagging, sprayed insulation and damaged asbestos board. A Class B licence is limited to non-friable asbestos over 10 m². Holding Class A means the same crew can remove fibro sheeting and friable material on one site under one licence.

Supervisors and operators

We have six nominated asbestos removal supervisors. Our plant operators hold the high risk work licences and verifications of competency their machines require, and our team is police checked.

Safety systems

Safe work method statements

Demolition of load-bearing structures, work likely to disturb asbestos, and trenching deeper than 1.5 metres are all high risk construction work under the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011. A safe work method statement (SWMS) is prepared before any of this work starts and is kept on site while it is under way.

Asbestos removal control plans

Before licensed asbestos removal, we prepare an asbestos removal control plan setting out how the asbestos will be removed, contained and disposed of. Workplace Health and Safety Queensland is notified in writing at least five days before work begins. The same notice applies to notifiable demolition of structures six metres or higher.

Air monitoring and clearance certificates

For Class A (friable) removal, an independent licensed asbestos assessor monitors the air immediately before and during the work, then inspects the area and issues a clearance certificate. After non-friable removal, an independent competent person inspects and issues the clearance. Our asbestos documentation includes air monitoring results, waste tracking records and the clearance certificate.

Asbestos before demolition

All asbestos likely to be disturbed is identified and, so far as reasonably practicable, removed before demolition starts. Where a building has no asbestos register, a competent person inspects first. Because we hold a Class A licence, asbestos removal and demolition are run by one contractor under one program.

Environmental compliance

Contaminated soil

Contaminated soil work in Queensland is regulated under the Environmental Protection Act 1994. Before excavation we confirm whether the land is on the Environmental Management Register (EMR) or Contaminated Land Register (CLR). Soil removed from listed land for treatment or disposal needs a soil disposal permit from the Queensland environment department, plus written acceptance from the receiving site.

Working with your consultant

Site investigations follow the National Environment Protection (Assessment of Site Contamination) Measure 1999. An environmental consultant or occupational hygienist sets the sampling plan, classifies the soil and prepares the remediation and validation reports. Statutory reports are prepared by a suitably qualified person and, where required, certified by an approved auditor. We carry out the excavation, segregation, loading and transport to that plan, and keep excavations open until validation confirms the remaining soil meets the criteria.

Recycling and waste

We aim to recycle at least 85% of demolition material. Concrete is crushed at our Toowoomba recycling facility into 20-minus road base, 40–20 mm free-draining aggregate and 40–80 mm oversize. On the High Street Plaza demolition, about 8,000 tonnes of concrete was recycled and returned to site. Recycled material attracts no Queensland waste levy, which lowers disposal costs on large projects.

Transport

Our transport fleet is registered with the Queensland environment department.

Quality and management systems

Our safety, quality and environmental processes are aligned with ISO management system standards. Work is planned, documented and checked through the same system on every job, from the initial site inspection to handover.

Insurance

Burke Industries is fully insured for high-risk construction activities, including demolition and asbestos removal. Ask for current certificates of currency when you request a quote or issue a tender.

Government and commercial work

We work for local, state and federal government asset owners and Tier 1 commercial clients across Toowoomba and the Darling Downs. Past clients include QBuild, the Queensland Department of Education and the Department of Transport and Main Roads. We also take on projects elsewhere in Queensland and in Northern NSW.
